| For more than 30 years, Sunshine Center has provided quality, dependable and specialized early childhood education to children in the Independence and Jackson county area. This dedication to quality has made enrollment in Sunshine Center sought after by the community. Currently the center maintains a waiting list of students waiting for an opening at the center.
To accommodate enrollment needs, the Board of Directors for Sunshine Center purchased a new facility, located at 18400 East Salisbury Road in Independence. The new facility will allow Sunshine to provide openings for those currently on the waiting list. The larger facility will increase the number of classrooms from 12 to 27. The classroom space in the new building will increase in size.. The outside play area will be expanded from one central area to two age specific play areas. The large acreage, 9.9 acres, will allow for structured play and natural areas for exploration. The Salisbury Road facility will offer additional perks to the students of the center. An indoor open play area is planned as well as larger physical, occupational and speech therapy areas and a larger nursing room. Sunshine has a capital campaign underway to fund the $5.9 million building and renovation project. The current plans call for the Sunshine Center to open the new facility in September of 2007.
